The Utah Population Database
The UPDB is a computerized integration of pedigrees, vital statistics, and public records; all now linked to medical records. With more than 7 million linked records distilled from more than 11 million people, the UPDB is an unparalleled resource that provides information to biomedical researchers for clinical trials, genetic, epidemiological, demographic, and public health studies. The Utah Population Database is linked to the University of Utah Hospital Data Warehouse, which contains more than 1 million linked records that include ICD9 diagnoses, pharmacy data, medical imaging, radiology, pathology, outpatient documentation, and clinical data from community clinics.

This system allows researchers to identify large "high-risk" pedigrees for certain diseases. For instance, a researcher interested in osteoporosis can search the medical records for hip fractures, then use the UPDB to see if these fractures cluster in any large families. In some cases, high-risk pedigrees have been identified with tens of thousands of members.
